In May 2017 Nottingham Peacebuilders hosted its first series of events under the banner 'Small acts of Kindness Change the World'. This Nottingham Initiative was instigated by local individuals in response to a touring exhibition of three world leaders and their significant contribution to building a better world through peaceful means. Mohandas Gandhi, Dr Martin Luther King Jnr, and Daisaku Ikeda. Beginning with individual conversations, the community programme of live events set out to celebrate what humans can achieve in the name of peace; how we can demonstrate the nature and advantage of being peace builders in our daily lives, and how that affects a city and its population. By exploring the power of the individual to make a difference, Nottingham Peacebuilders set out to raise the profile of 'peace building' locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

To conclude Nottingham's 2017 peacebuilder programme, we want to leave a written legacy with our status as a UNESCO city of literature. We are inviting writers to generate work for the anthology based on this theme: Small Acts of Kindness Change the World. The anthology will be published in November, 2017 including work by leading Nottingham writers. Further details will be posted here and on

If you wish to have work considered for the anthology, please click here for the open submissions guidelines.

As with the live events in April and May, 2017 we invite everyone in the city of Nottingham and beyond to join us in a 'grand conversation' on the nature of creating a peaceful world, and the power of the individual to make a difference. As there is a 'passionate intensity' in the discourse of division and despair, Nottingham Peacebuilders creates a space for our communities, people of all backgrounds and persuasions, to come together to voice their will to peace. We feel that writers should be in the vanguard of this discourse.

These three hopeful and inspirational quotes have been lanterns to guide our activities.

  • Be the change you want to see in the world - Mohandas Gandhi

  • Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that - Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.

A great revolution of character in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation - Daisaku Ikeda

WELCOME

By choosing the theme of small acts of kindness we want to pull the focus from the impersonal to the personal, from action beyond our control, to the power and responsibility we each have to shape our own lives and the way in which we affect the lives of others
